Pop-Up Yoga + Science Conference

This one day conference will inform yoga practitioners and yoga teachers of the most recent scientific evidence supporting the use of yoga for optimizing consciousness, cell regeneration, longevity and health. Internationally recognized speakers will describe their own groundbreaking research, demonstrate models integrating eastern and western perspectives, and provide practical guidance for ways in which research evidence supports specific yoga practices. Presentations will be followed by question and answer sessions.

Paul MillsPaul J. Mills is Director of Research at the Chopra Foundation, Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health, and Director of the Center of Excellence for Research and Training in Integrative Health at the University of California, San Diego. He has expertise in Integrative Medicine and psychoneuroimmune processes in wellness and disease, publishing over 325 manuscripts and book chapters on these topics. He is Principal Investigator of the Self-Directed Biological Transformation Initiative, a randomized trial that is examining the psychosocial and biological effects of a whole-systems Ayurvedic Medicine intervention for wellbeing.
Sat Bir KhalsaSat Bir Singh Khalsa, Ph.D. has conducted yoga research since 2001 and is an instructor of Kundalini Yoga. He is Research Director for the Kundalini Research Institute and the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His research includes yoga for insomnia, stress, anxiety spectrum disorders, and mental health in public schools and the workplace. He directs the annual IAYT Symposium on Yoga Research and is editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Yoga Therapy and chief editor of the medical textbook The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Health Care.
Cook CottoneCatherine Cook-Cottone, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist, Registered Yoga Teacher, Associate Professor at SUNY at Buffalo, and Associate Editor of Eating Disorders: The Journal of treatment and Prevention. She is also the founder of Yogis in Service a not-for-profit organization that creates access to yoga. Her research specializes in embodied self- regulation (i.e., yoga, mindfulness, and self-care) and psychosocial disorders (e.g., eating disorders, trauma). She has written five books and over 50 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. Her most recent books are tilted, “Mindfulness and yoga for self-regulation: A primer for mental health professionals” and “Mindfulness and yoga in schools: A guide for teachers and practitioners.”
Neil TheiseDr. Neil Theise is a diagnostic liver pathologist in New York City.  An internationally recognized authority on liver stem cells, human liver cancers and on standards for diagnosis of viral hepatitis, he is also a pioneer in the field of adult stem cell plasticity, having published in this area in top tier biomedical journals such as Cell, Science, Nature and Nature Medicine.  Combining complexity theory with his biomedical interests and spiritual practices has brought to write extensively on science-spirituality dialogue, integrative medicine, and conciousness studies.  He is a senior student of Roshi Enkyo O’Hara at the Village Zendo in NYC.
William BushellWilliam C Bushell, PhD, is the Director of the Integrative Studies Historical Archive and Repository (isharonline.org), a new open access online database/information center specializing in integrative studies on consciousness and health. He has been researching consciousness, exceptional health and longevity, and heightened human potential around the world for over 3 decades, affiliated with Columbia, Harvard, and MIT. He has developed and convened several historic conferences with HH the Dalai Lama and Professor Robert Thurman and leading scientists, the most recent one resulting in his book with Neil Theise, Longevity, Regeneration, and Optimal Health: Integrating Eastern and Western Perspectives
Richard BrownRichard Brown, MD, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, graduate of Columbia University Medical College and Cornell University Psychiatry Residency and Psychobiology/Psychopharmacology fellowship, lectures internationally and has co-authored over 100 scientific articles, books chapters and award winning books. His neurophysiological theory exploring effects of yoga breathing in treating anxiety, depression, PTSD and stress-related medical conditions has been validated in clinical trials. A certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), yoga, Qigong, and meditation, he provides Breath-Body-Mind to healthcare professionals, yoga teachers, mass disaster survivors, first responders, veterans, school teachers, and patients with psychiatric and medical conditions. Crystal L. ParkCrystal L. Park, Ph.D., is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Connecticut. She conducts research on managing highly stressful and traumatic events and life-threatening illnesses. Her recent work focuses on integrative approaches to health, especially yoga. She is currently completing NCCIH-funded studies of yoga for stress management and the development of a research tool measuring the various dimensions of yoga, and has published studies of yoga, including motivations for practice, desired teacher qualities, characteristics of practitioners, and yoga in the context of cancer survivorship. She is co-author of the just-published Trauma, Meaning, and Spirituality: Translating Research Into Clinical Practice
(2017, American Psychological Association).
