How can we learn to enter into meditation? How can meditation help support, or exist independently, of our yoga practice?
Meditation is a practice of training the mind. Using the breath is one of the vehicles that can help bring us inner balance and clarity, which is something that we also do in yoga practice. We train ourselves to bring about inner space with asanas, and we train ourselves to practice with kind attention to ourselves and the people around us in meditation. We can train ourselves to become aware of awareness in meditation practice, and bring that awareness further into our yoga practice and lives.
Some have said that meditation is being, rather than doing. As soon as we are trying to “do” meditation, we are no longer meditating. Of course, however, we do have to do something, and the first thing we have to do is just take a seat (on the floor, on a cushion, or in a chair), and start.
Because “being” is so elusive (because we are unused to it), there are a few simple techniques that have been passed down over the ages that help our minds relax and enter into a meditative state. The techniques you will be introduced to over this six week course are:
- Space Meditation (week one)
- Metta, or Loving Kindness, practice (weeks two and three)
- Mindfulness of Breathing practice (weeks four and five)
- Walking practice (week six)
The course is intended to help you learn the basics of developing a practice of meditation that you can do at home, or in meditation groups. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions!
